How to Care for Your REED Gear This Winter

How to Care for Your REED Gear This Winter
As the New Year begins, it’s a great time to reflect on adventures and get your gear ready for what’s ahead. Whether you’re braving the icy waters or giving your kit a well-deserved rest, proper care now will keep it performing season after season.
From battling winter’s chill to prepping for spring’s return, here’s your ultimate guide to keeping your REED gear in top shape – because every great adventure begins with gear that’s ready to perform.

At REED, our mantra is simple: keep everything clean and dry. Stuffing a wet or dirty garment into a bag and forgetting about it for months can lead to unpleasant surprises – and maybe a few cheeky mice making themselves at home.

Daily Care Tips

  • Rinse after every use – If you’ve been in seawater, always rinse your kit thoroughly with fresh water. Rinsing after use in freshwater isn’t as critical, but drying it properly is essential.
  • Dry inside and out – Line drying is best, and make sure to dry your garment inside and out. For double-layer wrist or neck seals, hang them seal-side up to let trapped water drain through the inside seams.

Spotlight on Vulnerable Areas

Zips and Sliders
Your zips and sliders are critical to your gear’s longevity. Even though we use nylon zips and sliders, the small metal components can oxidize and corrode. Keep them moving to avoid seizing, and consider applying a silicone lubricant like TIZIP to protect them and reduce wear during storage.

Seals
Latex seals are particularly vulnerable as they contain natural rubber, which can degrade over time. Check for tiny V-shaped cracks or splits before using your gear. If seals feel sloppy or stretched, trim 2-3mm from the edge to prevent larger tears. Proper care now can save you from a ruined paddle day later!

Seam Tape and Stitching
Aquatherm and neoprene seam tape can loosen or stitching may snap over time. Inspect your gear regularly, checking inside and out for signs of wear. Tackle small issues early to ensure your gear stays watertight.

Feet, Socks, and Lower Legs
These areas bear the brunt of wear and tear, from rocks and coarse sand to the occasional nibble from critters. To check for leaks, pour a little water into the sock or leg, twist the fabric to seal it, and squeeze – leaks will reveal themselves quickly.
For small repairs, try Aquasure Flexible Sealant or REED’s hot melt tape (Kit 10). If you’re unsure or the damage is extensive, our repair service is here to help.

Caring for Your Aquatherm Garments

REED’s Aquatherm fabric is built to last, but proper care is still essential.

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle with standard washing powder, or
  • Hand wash using a diluted cap of Milton or half a cap of bleach with warm water.
  • Clean and dry gear not only lasts longer but also ensures it’s ready when you need it.

Winter Storage

Most of us store our kit in the attic, garage, or shed – prime real estate for mice. Each spring, we see gear damaged by rodents, especially neoprene. To protect your kit:

Make sure it’s clean and dry.
Pack it in a sealed container and keep it out of direct sunlight. A few simple steps now can prevent costly repairs and frustration when you’re ready to hit the water in the spring.

Don’t forget about yourself!
Great gear is only half the story – you need to take care of yourself too. When kayaking, remember:

  • Wear sunscreen – even in winter, UV rays can catch you out.
  • Stay hydrated – and yes, non-alcoholic fluids are best!

To wrap it up:

To keep your REED gear performing its best and avoid any unpleasant surprises, follow these two golden rules:

  • Keep everything clean and dry.
  • Store your gear properly to protect it from damage.

With a little care, your gear will serve you well season after season, ensuring you can make the most of every adventure – rain or shine. Enjoy the winter paddling season and stay safe on the water!
